CHAPTER 7
Ion was back in his default Gypsy body, pacing up and down the living room he shared with Andrew, “What will happen to him?” he asked, worriedly.
Andrew shrugged as he stir-fried vegetables in the kitchen.
“Did you know there were others like me out there, Andrew?”
“My parents told me that Travelers like you have always been rare… mm-mm, needs more MSG, hang on… sorry. What I do know is that there was a war a long time ago between your kind and the Shreen. Before that war, the rest of us, humans included, were slaves. If we weren’t slaves of the Travelers, we were slaves of the Shreen. The Shreen won that war, and well… here we are. Get the plates out, hon’, this is about done.”
“But Andrew, what will they do to him?”
“I really don’t know, hon’. I’m sorry, I really don’t. I don’t ask questions. Not of the Shreen, at least.”
“I thought they were kind.”
“Andrew, you’re a Gypsy. You’ve seen more of the world than me, and know far more than I how ugly it can be. The powerful rule, while the rest of us do the best we can. The Shreen haven’t been too bad as masters… I guess because they don’t really care one way or the other, so long as they’re in charge.”
“So you’re saying that they are kind?”
“Let’s not go too far, hon’. What I do know is that the Shreen have been so good at keeping the Clans under control that we’re all just myths and legends to the Humans now. Can you imagine what it was like in the old days when the only thing Humans were good for were cattle?”
“But, Andrew…”
“Cattle, Ion. Cattle! Food for the Vampire Clan and food for my kind – not that my kind really needs to feed on humans like the Vampires do. The Clan Wars were so devastating, hon’. And none of us breed anywhere near as fast and as plentifully as the Humans do. It’s why Human civilization is so young: if you cull enough hunters, then prey thrives and flourishes.”
“So you’re saying that the Shreen are my people’s enemies?”
Andrew sighed. Then he shut off the stove, walked into the living room, and dragged Ion to the couch beside him.
“Look, hon’. If the Shreen were not in charge, it would be you Travelers lording it over us all instead. You think it’s nothing to take over other people’s bodies and minds? Look what you did with Tyrel. Now we have access to yet another American military base, and a foothold in the NSA.
“What I’m trying to say, hon’, is that the Shreen are not at all the shiny, happy people you’d like them to be. No one is innocent in this world. Nothing with a mouth is, and you Travelers were certainly not the hapless, helpless victims, either.”
Ion looked miserable.
“Oh, hon’,” Andrew sighed as he drew Ion to him.
Andrew hated seeing his boyfriend miserable. Ion had been through enough misery in his life, but Andrew saw no reason to sugar-coat anything.
