R of 4 ds, join to adjacent p of previous r, 2 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 6 ds, cl. Rw and complete 2nd motif same as 1st motif.

Make 19 more motifs joining them as 2nd motif was joined to 1st (see illustration).

Work remaining 3 corners in same way, joining the corner p’s of end motifs of outer edge to form a square. Cut an 11-inch square of linen. Place lace on linen; with a ruler and pencil draw a line lightly along inner edge of lace, having the lines touch the p’s. Cut linen to within ¼ inch of line and make a narrow hem all around, having pencil mark at fold of hem. Sew lace to linen.

PLACE MATS (Make 4) ... Make 10 motifs for each corner and cut linen 8 inches square. Finish same as for Center Mat.

BREAD AND BUTTER PLATE MATS (Make 4) . . . Make 3 motifs for each corner and cut linen 4 inches square. Finish same as for Center Mat.

GLASS MATS (Make 4) ... Same as Bread and Butter Plate Mats.
