âYouâre back!â Bailey ran to meet them at the door when Maya and Riley walked into the suite fifteen minutes later. Her face was flushed with pleasure as she reached out to hold Rileyâs hand. âWeâve just finished making the stew and while it cooks, Tashi said I could do a sketch of you, if you donât mind?â She turned to Maya. âWould it be okay? I donât think theyâre going to stay long. Iâd like to have something to remember them by.â
âItâs entirely up to Riley,â Maya said. âIt would make Bailey happy if you wouldnât mind sparing ten minutes or so. Sheâs very quick.â
Riley shrugged. âIf you like. It really doesnât matter.â
âSit down. Iâll get you a cup of coffee.â Maya disappeared into the kitchen.
Riley smiled at Bailey. âThough I donât know why you think we wonât be staying long. Your mother just showed me some wonderful Greek vases with beautiful ladies riding fantastic horses. This entire place is very interesting.â She was looking around the apartment, which was charmingly decorated in a colorful Asian/modern fusion. She gestured to some sketches on the wall. âDid you do all these? Theyâre very good. Iâd be happy to join them.â She watched Bailey take out her sketchbook, sit down on the floor with legs crossed, and begin to sketch. âBut Iâm sorry that I donât have a horse to ride like that lady on the vase.â
âThat doesnât matter,â she said absently. âI can draw a horse anytime. All I have to do is go down to the stable. But people are almost always different and special once you see inside them. I donât think Mama would have brought you if you werenât special.â She was drawing swiftly. âI think maybe youâre like Mr. Cade who knows how to fix things.â
âWhere did you get that idea?â Riley asked. âCade and I are very different.â
âYou canât fix things?â
She thought about it. âWell, Iâve been trained to heal sick people. I guess you could say thatâs a form of fixing things.â
âSure it is.â Bailey looked up with a brilliant smile. âFixing is fixing. I knew Mama wouldnât bring you unless you could help.â
âStop chattering and finish your sketch, Bailey.â Maya was back with a cup of coffee. âYou and Tashi promised to feed us lunch.â She handed the cup and saucer to Riley. âSorry to waste your time. I guess youâve discovered Bailey can be very driven when it comes to any idea she gets into her head.â
âShe doesnât mind,â Bailey said. âDid you know she heals people sometimes?â
âYes, Iâve seen her do it very recently,â Maya said. âBut sheâs not here to do that. We have other, more important things that need doing. Have you finished the sketch?â
âYes.â Bailey got to her feet. âThank you for allowing me to sketch you, Riley. If itâs all right with you, I will hang it on the wall. Anytime you come back youâll see it and know Iâve been thinking about you.â
âWhat a lovely thought,â Riley said.
