>No. It was one disaster after another. Can I come home yet? :/

Ha-ha, fine with me. Your publishers might have a different opinion, though. :)

>I know it’s late, but can I call you?

Instead of answering, Dylan dialed Jax’s number. He picked up before Dylan’s end had even started ringing. There was a smile in his voice, but he sounded tired.

“Hello, Dylan. I won’t keep you long. I simply wanted to hear a friendly voice.”

“Hey, man. Everything okay?”

Jax’s heavy sigh turned into a groan of frustration. Apparently everything wasn’t okay.

“Turns out what I said about people who come to my signings not judging me was not strictly accurate.”

“Huh? What happened?” Dylan glanced at the stack of books on his coffee table.

“A woman I used to know was there at the signing, under the guise of getting a signature for a friend. What she really wanted, however, was to give me a piece of her mind about the ‘filth’ I write.” Jax laughed without a lot of humor. “That was before she realized it was me. When she recognized me halfway through her tirade, I got a speech about how my family had raised me better than this.”

“What an asshole!”

“Yes. She was. So you see why I keep my pen name a secret? Even in what should be a safe space filled with people who like what I do, this can happen.”

Dylan instantly felt guilty about figuring out the pen name and buying the books. Well, not so much buying the books, since Jax would get royalties, but still. He couldn’t read them.

“I’m really sorry that happened, Jax. Some people are going to try and tell other people how to live their lives, no matter what.” As he talked, he took the books and put them on the highest shelf of his bedroom closet.

“I know. I’ve got to shake it off. It isn’t like I care what she thinks. I’m just angry that someone like that got in, you know? Used her friend’s enjoyment of my work for her own agenda. Now she’ll go show her friend the book, and her friend will be so pleased, never knowing what this lady really thinks of her taste in books.”
