Chapter Seven

Ethan sat on the edge of the bed looking lost, and feeling lower than he ever thought possible as he watched Heather move around the room. She opened up the top drawer of the dresser and took out a plain white tank top and pulled it over her head. The corner of Ethan’s mouth twisted into a smirk as he thought about the fact that she refused to move in on some convoluted notion of remaining her own person, and yet her things occupied three of the six drawers in his dresser and nearly half of his closet space. He had tried to reason with her about it many times, but she wouldn’t budge, even though she spent 95 percent of her off-duty time there with him.

She pulled on her uniform pants and then sat down beside him to put on her shoes. This was tough. They worked the same shift, and ordinarily they would be moving around the room together in an intricate dance, laughing and talking and trying to keep their hands to themselves as they got ready for work side by side.

“I feel like a fucking useless piece of shit.” He looked down at the floor as he mumbled the words. Could he feel any more pathetic right now?

Heather tried to smile as she looked at him. She hated getting dressed for work and leaving the apartment without him. His mood only seemed to get worse with each passing day that she left him here. She couldn’t imagine what he must be going through. It had only been several days, but the news coverage was getting out of hand.

“You should get out and do something today, babe.” She concentrated on her shoe lace and then glanced up at him again. “Don’t stay cooped up in here again today. Go out for a run at least.”

“Yeah. I’ll do that. Me and all my new friends out there on the lawn.” He pointed toward the window as he rose from the bed and began to pace around. He could just imagine it. Him jogging down the road with a horde of reporters trailing after him, like a scene from Forrest Gump. “I’m sure they would all love that.”

Restless and agitated, he picked up the remote control from the nightstand as he stalked around the room and switched on the television.

“Well, the bottom line is that it’s atrocious what’s happening in this country. The police seem to think that they have some God-given right to simply do as they please just because they carry a badge. But they are sworn to uphold the law. That does not mean that they have the right to take the law into their own hands and appoint themselves judge, jury and executioner. How many young men of color are we going to lose at the hands of white police officers – to this insane, unprovoked wave of blue violence? What does it bring the count to now with this latest incident in Eastwood?”

“Unprovoked?
