If you need to include the contents of another Photoshop document in your current document, choose File> Place Linked (or Embedded) and Photoshop places the entire document as a single smart object. To edit the Photoshop document you placed, double-click the smart object’s layer thumbnail.

Use the Properties panel to feather masks and adjust mask opacity

It’s better to feather layer masks than selections because you get a preview and you can alter feather amount after closing the document. For example, to create a soft-edged selection—say, for a soft oval vignette collage—create a selection, add a layer mask, and then double-click the mask’s thumbnail. In the resulting Properties panel, use the Feather slider to feather on the fly. The Density slider is handy for adjusting mask opacity; just double-click any mask—even the one you get with smart filters—to summon these sliders in the Properties panel.
