Chapter 10

Two weeks later, Zhara stared out at the concert hall, watching as three men and three women walked down the side aisles. Several were chatting amiably, while two of the newcomers were silent, scowling at the stage. In irritation? Resentment?

Zhara turned away from the scene and began pacing around. “What have I done?” she whispered, trying to think of a way she could escape. But as soon as the word formed in her thoughts, she rejected them. She wasn’t a coward! Not anymore. She was a pianist and today she would discover if she was a good one. If she wasn’t, well, then she would still continue to play the piano. It soothed her rage, eased her sadness, and enhanced her joy.

But if she wasn’t good, then she would lose the dream of playing for an audience. She would keep the doors to her music room closed so that she could play only for herself, or for Drago on those occasions when he had time. She had started playing more in the early evenings so that she was warmed up by the time Drago strolled into their suite. He would join her for the last thirty minutes or hour, before they sat down to dinner. She’d listen to his day and she would tell him about the new music pieces she’d worked on. He never complained that she wasn’t taking up the reins that most royal brides established after their marriage. He actually encouraged her to play more often, but was determined that she not be allowed to skip meals.

It was incredibly sweet of him to not ask her to leave off the most joyous part of her life so that she could help him. It was almost as if he respected her music, considered it to be her job. And so she’d started working on her music as if it truly was her job. She’d become more disciplined over the past month. She’d established a routine and a schedule, a timetable for learning new pieces. She recorded her practices and replayed them during her lunch breaks, listening for errors or places she could tweak for a higher effect. And she watched videos of other concert pianists, learning their techniques and scoffing at some of their errors, thinking about how she would play the piece differently, if not better.

Now, standing backstage at the concert hall, she wondered if she’d been fooling herself all these years. She wasn’t that good. Music was just a hobby, she thought, admonishing herself for yearning for something that was beyond her capabilities.

“They are ready for you, Zhara,” Drago announced, coming through the backstage entrance. She watched him come to her, thinking back to the first time he’d brought her here. The table they’d made love upon was still in its place. She smiled weakly up at him as he came to a halt, taking her hands in his.

“You’ve got this, habibi,” he assured her. “Just play like you did last night for me. Play for me.
