CHAPTER TWELVE
The house was too quiet now. Janie and Sarah had stayed about a week before they had to head back to their lives in Hartsville, and Ellie almost wished she could head back with them.
She hated wandering around this lonely old house by herself. Even now that she felt like she had mostly conquered the ghosts of her past, she just wasnât a person that liked being alone.
Janieâs paranoia had rubbed off on Ellie now too. She had difficulty sleeping at night with all the noises. She heard what sounded like footsteps at odd hours of the night. Sometimes she would startle herself awake thinking someone was in her room with her, but she could never find anything.
Logically, she knew that old houses made noises and she was just making a big deal out of nothing, but she still struggled to sleep each night.
Perched at the kitchen table with her cell phone in hand, notes app pulled up, Ellie forced herself to stop whining and focus on the task in front of her.
Now that she knew the gender, she really wanted to buckle down and get the nursery together. It was well into July now and her jeans had started to feel a little too snug as her belly began rounding out. It was starting to feel more real now, as she felt her little bean doing his daily aerobics lesson in her tummy, and Ellie wanted to be prepared.
Honestly, she felt very overwhelmed as she went over this list. There was so much she had to get and so much she had to learn before this little man made his arrival. She had always thought she would be doing this with Adam at her side, so she hadnât worried too much about the finer details.
As she looked at the list now, she felt all her fears and insecurities begin to creep back in like a vice grip closing around her chest.
What if she couldnât do this?
What if she messed this up?
What if she bought the wrong kind of crib or style of car seat?
The worries were endless, and for once, making her lists didnât really calm her down, it did just the opposite. Closing her notes, Ellie decided she needed to do something else, anything else.
She decided she could use a trip to the grocery, get stocked up on some essentials while getting out of the house for a bit. Decision made; Ellie felt a palpable sense of relief run through her at being able to postpone the baby lists for a while.
Ellie grabbed her purse, and made her way out to her car, locking the house up behind her. As she pulled out of her driveway and drove in the direction of the grocery store, she realized this was the first time she had left the house since her ultrasound last week.
If she wasnât careful, she would end up becoming a certified hermit. She needed to make an effort to find something to do around town, get out and make some friends, be social.
