Hugh returned at midnight, slipping into their cabin with a sunburned neck and beer on his breath. He, Courts, Tom, and James had spent the day in a taverna garden drinking Mythos beer, he explained—possibly more than one taverna.

“But don’t worry, Rodney made us leave before Courts made an ass of himself,” he reassured her.

“I’m glad,” she said, kissing him. “Now go shower.”

He did, then passed out immediately.

The next day, an elaborate brunch was laid out for all the guests. Everyone was staying for another night, which delighted Jennie. The yacht was so big that they all had their own cabins, even Karen and Aunt Kelly. Feeling relaxed and happy, Jennie drank not one but two bellinis, letting the bubbles go to her head and knowing that she could just take an afternoon nap if she wanted. Why not live it up?

She had just finished eating a big plate of food when suddenly something was wrong. She had never felt anything like it before. She had only seconds to push her chair back and stagger over to the rail before everything—two bellinis, six pieces of vegan maki, three crostini with rustic olive medley, several grilled asparagus, and a bite of flourless chocolate cake—were forcefully expelled into the glittering blue waters below. Heaving, catching her breath, and wondering whether anything else would come up, Jennie was forced to contemplate the disgusting snail trail down the immaculate white hull of the Somerset.

Hugh was at her side instantly, holding her gently, stroking her back. But no one else spoke or moved until, with perfect timing, James asked, “Was it something I said?”
