Idonea opened her mouth to speak, but Nerthus interrupted.

“We can provide lodging here at the academy,” she said gruffly, “we are not completely inhospitable.”

Not completely, Raine thought to herself, but kept her silence. Idonea found the offer entertaining, sensing there was more to it than mere hospitality.

“Want to keep me close, do you?” Idonea said wickedly, and Nerthus’ pale cheeks grew red once more. Raine actually felt sorry for the woman. Idonea grew more like her mother each day, so the poor knight commander didn’t stand a chance. Idonea would do with this woman whatever she willed.

“Even so,” Raine said, “Fireside is open to you if you wish.”

“You know the owners of Fireside?” Nerthus said with skepticism. Fireside was the largest, most luxurious residence in the imperial capital, rivaled only by the imperial palace itself. It was maintained by an enormous staff but no one was ever seen going in or out. Speculation on the occupants was rampant and it seemed highly unlikely that this mercenary, or whatever she was, could be associated with them.

“I am the owner of Fireside,” Raine replied. “True, I spend most of my time in a cave, but I do have residences scattered about Arianthem.” She winked at Idonea. “The cave is my favorite, though.”

“I wonder why,” Idonea said. Raine had stumbled across her mother in dragon form in the cave over two decades ago, and they had been madly in love ever since.

“Anyway,” Raine said, “I have a few things to attend to here in the capital so I will be here a while longer. I will see you later this evening.”

Idonea kissed Raine on the cheek once more and Nerthus felt a stirring of emotion she would not admit was jealousy. The dark-haired mage made it worse when she cast those long eyelashes in her direction with a wicked glint in her eye.

“Would you like a goodbye kiss as well?”

Nerthus could not find her voice, merely blushed profusely as the mage sauntered past her, said her goodbyes to Bristol and Elyara, and then disappeared.
