CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

Cy’s fists landed with precision as he laid into the bag over and over again. He felt each blow as it traveled up his arm harder and harder. His breath exploded with every punch and every kick.

“What’d this bag ever do to you, hermano?” Bernard Lucio, Cy’s sparring partner, did his best to spot the workout, but was losing his grip.

“Nothing I can talk about,” Cy grunted. He sent one final fist into the bag before turning away to peel off his gloves.

The gym at the academy was set up more as a training one for fighters. Bernard worked as a boxing and combat coach and both men had struck up a friendship in the first few weeks of the semester. Cy considered the idea of Bernard coming by the defense class, but the Latino man was too much of a flirt, and Cy thought some of the women would be nervous around him. Ivy’s face floated in his mind. He was willing to bet Ivy was not her real name.

“That fibbie guy, what’s his name, Blaylock? He came to see you yesterday. Again. What’s up with that?”

Cy squirted a stream of water into his mouth from a neoprene water bottle. “Past case. Looking for shit I don’t know and don’t want to know.”

“He said something about that Galanos fuckup in Minnesota. Asked me if you’d ever said anything about it.”

Cy set the bottle down with a curse. “Fuckwad. He should know better. He told me the case was reactivated with new information. Stupid shit needs to keep his trap shut instead of sharing classified intel.”

Bernard slipped his gloves on and pressed his hands together to set them. “I remember the shit that went down up there. You had that personal code thing going on while you were deep undercover. Genius, man. Asking for specific Filtrete air filters and using the numbers as communication, right? You had a guy at the store who passed on the info. What was it, twenty by twenty meant to set up the raid and the backorder period helped time it, right? The final signal was changing colors on that diner sign close to the compound.” Bernard clicked his tongue and moved back into a fighting stance. “Tightest operation we’ve ever seen, but still turned into a royal clusterfuck. You were still cleared, though. Unexpected IED, right?”

Cy grunted. “Yeah. Raid was planned to the minute, but then Grizzly, the Tiger Clan MC pres, took a hostage. Two of them.” He grasped the bag and moved his feet to brace himself. “As carefully as we had the timing down, we couldn’t account for every contingency. The man they called Iceman rigged his bike with enough C4 to level the place. He’d hoped to kill Grizzly when he tried to start the bike. Couple of his guys did it too early and blew up half the building with a lot of people in it. Fucked us up completely.”

Cy blinked and his eyes grew unfocused as he recalled the visions of that horrible day.
