At department stores, I always comb through these collections for

current-looking indispensable pieces with trend references.

I.N.C.: Offers many of the same pieces found in the I.N.C. missy line in the season, like jackets with seaming for shape, well-cut pants with subtle lace trims, satin bias and circle skirts, and satin coats. Use the twenty-second test on wools.

Emme: Filled with current shapes in great quality fabrics like stretch Ultrasuede, faux leather, shot wools, and jersey. Expensive-looking details like top stitching, niching, pintucking. Look for the flat-front bi-stretch bootcut pant (this is the best pant of its kind I’ve seen for curvy girls), and the power eami for a smooth finish under tops.

Company Ellen Tracy: Shop one item at a time, very true womans cut in denim jeans, mixable, simple sweaters and good outerwear pieces.

Lafayette 148: Current cuts in jackets, pants; great fabrics.

Ellen Tracy: Conservative but a good source for elegant, mixable coats, and very well-cut jackets.

tip: For tall, curvy girls I always take a look in the men’s department. Stay clear of anything oversized and baggy, however. Look for sweaters and shirts that have a tapered cut. They’ll give you a skimming look with pants or a pencil skirt and heels. One of the many dirty little secrets of ready-to-wear is that men’s collections are less expensive and often better made than women’s wear. At the designer level, Helmut Lang, YSL, Gucci, Prada, and Marc Jacobs are all lines to look through for shirts and sweaters in solid, seasonal trend colors. Club Monaco, Zara. H&M, and Express are always worth a look for their interpretations of the expensive labels listed earlier.
