Chapter 5

India

Traditional societies place primacy on the collective, sharing resources and living in harmony with the natural world. The patenting of life is antithetical to their interdependent worldview where man is one part of a holistic ecosystem. On the other hand, the value system that guides the corporation is the profit motive. The reverence for living creatures can thus be subverted to narrowly defined interests.

In this chapter and the next two, we seek to compare the experiences in four developing countries so that we can better understand the impact of this nascent technology on the lives of farmers. Also, we seek to explore whether their national development priorities and issues related to food sovereignty are being compromised by the diffusion of GM crops. We need to pay special attention to the role of institutions and government policies that facilitate or impede the adoption of biotechnology. The role of civic associations and civil society in general and the pressures from burgeoning interests from below vary across countries. Differences in experiences are of course the by-product of these unique features of each country. In this chapter and the next, we will examine two important emerging markets that comprise more than one-third of the world’s population, namely India and China. Let us begin with India.
