The Digitalization of Missions to the UN: Challenges and Impacts

The integration of digital ICTs has created unprecedented opportunities for permanent missions to achieve their objectives. However, as we have already alluded to, the growing use of digital platforms in diplomatic activities has had significant impacts on permanent missions, their staff, and the UN system as a whole. In the next sections, we wish to discuss some of the challenges experienced by diplomats from permanent missions to the UN and show how they are often linked to different domestic and regional realities. We also wish to discuss how the digitalization process has produced all sorts of consequences, including some dysfunctional (undesirable) ones (Roger, 2003), both for UN diplomacy and for individuals within the UN system.
