Chapter 8

“Where did all that money come from?”

I fumbled with my phone as my mother’s voice splashed through the languid haziness of my half-asleep brain.

“It’s three in the morning here, and I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I said thickly. “And hello. It’s nice to talk to you too.”

She ignored my sarcasm.

“The extra bonus,” she said impatiently. “Practically Perfect Nannies called to make sure the transfer had gone through.”

What? I sat up in bed, trying to clear my head. “But I—”

“You were right, Ava,” she said, cutting me off. “I’m sorry I told you not to take this job. I was just worried you’d be traveling so far, but you were right. It does make a difference.”

I wanted to tell her that I still had no clue what she was talking about, but how long had it been since I’d heard this excitement in her voice? I wasn’t ready to hear this happiness disappear, so I probed carefully.

“What exactly did the person from the agency say?”

“Just that the client had asked for confirmation that we received it.”

“I see,” I hedged. “Can I call you later?”

“Yes, of course. I just wanted to tell you. We can pay off most of the credit card debt and maybe even go out to a fancy dinner.”

Her soft laughter was from a distant past, and something tightened in my chest. Years ago, stress and worries had not yet consumed her. This was the mother I missed, the person I’d almost forgotten she could be.

“Thank you for calling, Mama.”

I ended the call and stared out into my room, the last of sleep fading away. Sunlight glowed near the horizon, and the night was still. I rubbed my eyes, trying to think straight. Edward had made a payment last night, and I was guessing it happened after we’d had sex. Which sounded a hell of a lot like getting paid for sex.

I told myself there could be another explanation, that I shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but how could I not? I couldn’t leave this alone. I got out of bed, and I didn’t even know where I was headed until I was out of my room. His bedroom was off-limits, but so was what he had done.

The hallway was quiet. I passed the staircase and the door to the attic, trying to come up with alternative explanations. The farther I walked, the less certain I felt. If I opened his door for real, what would I find? I rested my hand on his knob, swallowed and turned it.

The door opened, and my gaze went straight to the bed. Unlike in my dream, it was large and modern, with lots of blue and white, and Edward lay in the middle, with his arm over his head. I took a few tentative steps forward. He looked so relaxed. Almost vulnerable. I wasn’t prepared to feel this kind of tenderness for him, not after what he’d done. I tried to harden my heart.

“Edward?”

He didn’t stir.

“Edward,” I repeated, a little louder.
