"Why don't we have something to eat?" suggested Kase. That always made a wolf feel better. "Have you been eating?"

Connor nodded, still not wanting to look at his face. "I caught some things while I was waiting. A couple of rabbits, a bird."

"I'm sure you don't want to answer a bunch of questions right now, so I won't invite you to eat with my parents," said Jody, still being cheerful and warm and gentle. "I'll just cook up something here. I made a grocery run while you were at work," he added conversationally. "If we're on our own, we have to get used to buying or catching our own meat, rather than using pack meat. It's only fair."

"Yes."

"Or raising our own. I wonder if there's room for a few chickens here? But I don't want to commit to anything while the future's still sort of open-ended. So how many of you brothers are there, anyway?" He glanced at the two men as he got out some meat and eggs, giving them a friendly look, comparing them, and smiling at what he saw.

"Four," said Kase. "He's my closest in age. Father set us to spar a lot, and we worked together frequently. The younger two are twins, and they're still in high school. They do help with the pack, but they don't do as much as Connor and I did."

"They're pitching in now, let me tell you," said Connor. "The little terrors."

Kase snorted. "Little? The Ginsins aren't little even when they're pups."

"You're telling me," said Jody, grinning. He stirred up some eggs and mixed them with hamburger and fried it all lightly with chopped-up cooked potatoes, occasionally adding a dollop of cream. Wolves tended to eat high-protein, high-fat diets, so neither of the Ginsins batted an eye at the hash he was making. He threw in a few spices and stirred the mixture that was beginning to smell really good in his big cast iron pan. "Shit, I forgot onions."

"It smells good anyway," said Connor. He and Kase were seated on the kitchen chairs now, pulled back towards the bed so there was more room for Jody to work. They looked at one another awkwardly, and this time didn't look away.

"He seems really nice."

"He is. Thanks." He hesitated, then reached over and forced himself to clasp a hand on Connor's knee. They weren't touchy-feely brothers, so it was difficult. "I'm sorry," he said, looking into Connor's eyes, meeting his gaze even when it was uncomfortable. "I should've said goodbye."

"Yeah," said Connor. He cleared his throat. "Just for the record, if you're not coming back, neither am I."

They looked at one another, a bald, open, weighing look, each taking the other's measure. "Why?" asked Kase.

"It was hard before, but you were there. I followed along, we stuck together, and it was hard work but good work. Now … dealing directly with Father so much, taking the brunt of all his expectations … nothing about me is cut out for that."

"You'll please him better than I ever did.
