Chapter Seven

Being a wolf was fucking awesome. When Nick wanted to just lie around and sleep there were dozens of good spots to lie down in, all of them smelling like pack. And pretty much every time, one of his packmates would join him, which smelled and felt even better.

Sam would sit at his side with a laptop, fidgeting and draping himself over Nick as he worked. Mike would make phone calls in human shape or nap along with him as a wolf. Rusty never stayed for long, but he knew exactly the right way to pet Nick; it felt so good that he forgot to be embarrassed about how much he liked having his ears and his belly rubbed.

He felt sharper and stronger than he had before he was bitten; napping was interspersed with playing and eating—mostly raw meat, which was freakishly delicious, but sometimes Sam would feed him pieces of fruit, too. Nick always took them gently from his fingers, with a lot of licks of gratitude. He wasn’t getting busted for snapping at Sam again, not ever. He never wanted Sam to be scared.

There was a lot of running around, jumping into and out of the pool and sprinting wild laps around Sam’s crazy huge yard. He and Mike played together sometimes, and sometimes playing turned to fighting, but it always went back to playing before long. Nick couldn’t hurt Mike, so it didn’t matter if sometimes the impulse burst through him to try. A few growls and snaps and it was over, no harm done.

Rusty stayed in human shape but set him challenges to learn his new four-legged body, which was how he wound up on the roof of the guest house on his second day as a werewolf. Mike followed him up, and Rusty just stood there, laughing at them like an asshole and telling them they could figure out how to get back down.

But then it turned out that Nick could make the jump from the roof of the guest house into the pool, so that was the best thing ever. Plus, he could splash Rusty from truly epic distances, which served him right for sending Nick up on the roof in the first place.

Nick wasn’t really paying attention to numbers, but there had already been some nights of sleeping curled up on the bed with Mike and Sam and Rusty (and at least two occasions of realizing that the other three were all human-shaped, having sex in another room). The moon was down for half the day now, and a little before noon Nick was ready to take a nap until the afternoon moonrise gave him a new rush of energy.

He wandered around the house, looking for a good spot, and then he heard Rusty saying his name. He didn’t even decide, he was just running to Rusty’s side—to the guest house, as it turned out. There was a big bed there, smelling less-used than the pack bed, and Rusty was sitting on the edge of it.
