Rusty tightened his hand on Sam in silent reassurance and adjuration to quiet. He realized even as he did it that Sam wasn’t alarmed.

Sam couldn’t hear anything at all on the other end of the line.

When Rusty squeezed, Sam looked at him, frowning a little. Rusty raised a finger to his lips. Sam nodded.

Rusty closed his eyes, listening, steadying his heartbeat, and then he said, “You have Mike, and you’re going to kill him if I don’t give Sam to you.”

Sam sat up straight, his heartbeat rising fast.

The alpha on the other end scoffed. “I’ve got the guard dog, and I’ve already had my teeth in him. You’ll give me the omega, or I’ll force my new wolf to help me hunt him and take him from you.”

Rusty closed his eyes, straining after the sound of Mike’s heartbeat. He was unconscious, no telling how badly wounded. He sounded just like Nick had while Rusty had waited beside him, wondering whether he dared to bite him to save his life, and this psycho had—

“He hasn’t turned,” Rusty said. He sounded calm even to himself. “He’s human.”

“For now,” the alpha said, unconcerned. “Moonrise will be the end of that, though. If you don’t want your old friend to have to kill you on his first night as a wolf, you’ll bring me that omega and bend your neck to me. Be my pack and I might even let you fuck him once in a while, if you’re good.”

Sam’s heartbeat, which had been oddly steadier than Rusty would have expected, went suddenly wild. Rusty looked over and realized that Sam had his laptop out and was tapping at the screen with both hands, working on something Rusty couldn’t see. His jaw was set, his face so pale that his freckles stood out like flecks of blood.

“Oh, are you letting that sweet boy listen in?” The alpha made a little chiding tsk. “An omega should be protected from this kind of unpleasantness. You’ll only scare him.”

The alpha wasn’t in the room; he could hear Sam’s heartbeat speeding up, but he couldn’t see the light in his eyes, the muscle standing out in his jaw. He couldn’t smell Sam’s killing rage boiling in his blood.

“You ever actually met an omega?” Rusty asked. “The idea of getting fucked by alphas doesn’t scare them.”

“Well I wasn’t expecting him to be quite so excited about it,” the alpha said, with a nasty edge of laughter in his voice. “I see I should have moved faster—I thought I’d take my time, make all the necessary preparations, but you just had to swoop in and try to take him from me.”

Sam’s mouth opened sharply, but he looked over at Rusty and stayed quiet.

“You want me to bring him to you,” Rusty said. “Where?”

“Just bring him out in the open, I’ll find you when I want you,” the alpha said. “Don’t think you can rush me, and don’t do anything stupid. Being an alpha isn’t just about muscles and teeth, jarhead.
