“What are we supposed to be doing?” Bouncing my leg restlessly, I glanced over at Alex as he backed his SUV into the tight parking space around the back of the youth centre.

“I already told you. I’ll do a short talk, we’ll both answer any questions, then sign some shit. Maybe throw around the ball a bit. Liv will talk us through it.”

Olivia volunteered as an art teacher at Horizons Youth Centre, which was part of a larger community centre close to Savage Boxing Gym, comprising a sports hall, games room, café, and several smaller rooms, one of which she used for her art class. She’d persuaded Alex to come and meet some of the kids, and he, in turn, had dragged me along. I still wasn’t completely on board with the idea, since I wasn’t exactly a great role model. One thing I had insisted on was privacy. Yeah, something like this might improve my reputation with the tabloids, maybe, but I didn’t want it to descend into a media circus.

I took a large gulp of my coffee after unsuccessfully stifling my yawn. We’d been at an away game yesterday, and I was still tired and frustrated at myself for ending up in the sin bin again. I was skating on the thinnest fucking ice now and any day, it was going to break.

Shaking off my heavy thoughts, I followed Alex around to the front entrance of the building, where Olivia and Luke were both waiting. Chucking my now empty coffee cup into the bin outside the doors, I steeled myself for whatever was waiting for us inside.

“Alright?” Alex’s face broke into a huge grin when he saw them standing there. I gave them both a nod, staying back and letting them take the lead. Once we were inside, Olivia introduced us both to the director, Nick, a guy in his mid-sixties with an open, friendly face that immediately put me at ease. Or at least until he spoke.

“I can’t tell you how much this means to us. Not just to me but to the community.” His eyes sparkled. “You two have proven to be quite a draw. Apologies in advance.”

A groan escaped me, and I quickly tried to disguise it with a cough. People and I did not mix well. Alex shot me a warning look, and I set my jaw, dropping my gaze.

In my pocket, my phone buzzed, and I immediately pulled it out, glad to have something else to focus on.

There was a single text message waiting for me.

Tori: Good luck today. Don’t forget to smile
