It was after midnight when they returned to the Pappas home. The garage lights flared on as Ado drove through the open doors.
âSorry, I didnât mean to fall asleep and leave you to drive home in silence. We are so lateâ are we going to have to creep into the house like a couple of wayward teenagers?â Mara mumbled as she opened her eyes.
âDonât be sorry. Youâve been putting in a lot of hours at the hospital and at the temple. I know my father can be demanding, and I am grateful. Even if no one else in the family is.â Adonis was already out of the car and gathering all their bundles together as a yawning Mara climbed out of her door. Ado put his arm around Tamaraâs shoulder as she stumbled on the walk into the house.
âI forgot how heavy these boots get by the end of the day.â Mara hurried to explain her clumsiness.
âAre you going to be okay climbing the stairs or do you need me to carry you?â Adonis asked in a teasing voice.
Tamara made a face at him. âNo. You have enough to handle already and youâre not Hercules.â
âIâm crushed! You donât think Iâm the strongest man in the world.â Ado chuckled.
In spite of the packages he was carrying and the rucksack on her back, Ado swept a laughing Mara into his arms and started climbing the staircase.
âIs there a reason my wife is incapable of walking on her own?â
Ajaxâs voice was calm and quiet. Scary calm and scary quiet, as he stood in the doorway of the library.
âPoor little girl couldnât walk without tripping over her own feet.â Ado laughed as he climbed another step.
âOh, youâre home!â Mara said at the same time. âPut me down, Ado.â
âSo it is acceptable for my brother to be carrying you if I am not home?â Ajaxâs jaw ticked. It seemed to be doing that whenever they were in the same room with his brother. Had they had a fight she knew nothing about?
âWe were just goofing around,â Mara laughed. Other than Ado, there was no audience, so why was Ajax acting all jealous?
Then Daria stepped out of the library looking all mussed and frazzled and Maraâs own temper started to prick at her. Especially when Daria wrapped herself onto Ajaxâs side.
The woman had the audacity to kiss Jax, right there in the hall, in front of Tamara. Sure it was only on the cheek, but it was still a kiss. Adoâs arms tightened around Mara as he seemed to sense her desire to pummel the bitch.
âThank you so much for today. There are no words to express what it has meant to me.â
The woman looked like the cat that not only swallowed the canary, but had guzzled down all the cream, too. Mara wanted to rip out the womanâs hair and shove it through her gloating lips.
Ajax had stood her up to spend the day with that horrible woman!
There were no words to describe the pain
