CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

ALLEN WAS BECOMING NECESSARY TO HER, AND as much as that was a lovely thing, Eliza also recognized it as a weakness when it came to keeping him safe. Her inclination was to keep him at her side at all times, but given their situation, she had to keep him hidden and put him out of her mind whenever she stepped into her role as agent to the crown.

The houses along Kensington Road were mostly generously sized terraced townhouses facing the green expanse of the park, but closer to Kensington there were a few freestanding mansions. The baron’s household occupied one of the latter. Small lanes on either side of the house separated it from its neighbors.

Eliza met Sara Davis, fellow agent and friend, at the appointed place and time, and as they strolled and chatted inside Kensington Gardens with a perfect view of the Repkomanov residence, Armand rode up in a hackney cab. He was garbed in a fresh black suit and crisp white linens; even his bandage was fresh. He was admitted to the house, and the cab was dismissed a couple of minutes later. Through one of the windows on the first floor, the two ladies observed Armand embracing a young woman, presumably Sophie.

Sara smiled pleasantly for the benefit of a passing couple. “I do hope he doesn’t tell her anything.”

Eliza laughed lightly as if her friend had made a witty remark. “He knows it would put her in danger. All his effort goes to getting his sister out of her situation permanently and without harm to her.” For Allen’s sake, Eliza would have preferred to simply put a bullet in the Russian’s head. She was far from happy with the imposed delay.

Sara had no trouble comprehending the unsaid. “Perhaps he will make a rendezvous at the Serpentine so we can put your plan in action.”

Meanwhile, it seemed Repkomanov was not at home. Eliza had never even considered that possibility, but as they idly chatted and watched Armand being fussed over by his sister, all they could be sure of was that Armand had not delivered his message.

Be that as it may, the two women couldn’t stand in place forever. There surely were sentries set at the Repkomanov mansion who would notice anyone who remained for too long. The ladies agreed to move on and leave watching the front of the house to Sara’s man, who lingered out of sight.

But just as Sara was about to kiss Eliza’s cheek goodbye, an ostentatiously decorated chaise, drawn by a perfectly matched quartet of shiny black horses, drew up in front of the spymaster’s house, and the man himself alighted. He was tall, blond, and commanding, barking several orders at the people who came running out of the house to greet him. The women in the park kept chatting as they surreptitiously studied the man walking into his house without a backward glance.

“I don’t think his servants like him very much,” Sara stated lightly. “They are all afraid of him.
