Stefan awoke disoriented in the ambulance a few times; his eyes met Jordan’s and he plunged into darkness again. The EMTs had sedated him and Jordan was thankful for that.

Now he was lying next to Stefan in the hospital bed, threading his fingers through his hair and trying to wrap his mind around the courtroom scene. He had thought for sure he was going to die. Williams had such malice in his eyes, holding a gun on him — and the only thing Jordan could think of was to protect Stefan. To discover Stefan holding a gun was just too much to take.

Jordan felt movement and heard a sigh. Stefan’s eyes were finally open.

“How long was I out?”

“About 12 hours; we had to sedate you.” Jordan palmed his face.

Stefan looked up. “Is he dead? Did I…did I kill him?”

Jordan shook his head. “No, he took a shot to the shoulder. Right now he’s in the prison hospital ward.”

Stefan’s body relaxed.

“I have to ask this, Stefan, and believe me I’ll take your side no matter what. I’ll perjure myself if it comes to that…”

Stefan sat up. “Where did I get the gun? I know that’s what you’re going to ask. I bought it not too long after Williams shot me, just for protection. When I came back from the bathroom I sat in the back. When things started going — wrong — I saw him. It was like slow motion and I couldn’t watch you die.”

Jordan ran his finger across Stefan’s jawline. “But the metal detectors — when you put your bag through the X-ray machine?”

Stefan stopped him.

“Let’s just say I was Stefano Santorno at that point. I paid off someone.” Stefan paused. “You’re disappointed in me aren’t you?”

Jordan ran his thumb over Stefan’s bottom lip.

“I will never be disappointed in you, Stefan. You did what you felt you had to do. Nothing you could do will ever change how I feel about you.”

“Am I in trouble?” he asked quietly.

“No. Fortunately, we have one badass of a district attorney. He explained the extreme duress you have been under because of the stalking and shooting and — while he disagrees with your method — he was able to convince the judge that it was the only way you felt safe. Given what happened, the judge is letting you off with a slap on the wrist.”

Jordan kissed Stefan’s forehead and relaxed into the feel of Stefan’s body before drifting off to sleep.
