CHAPTER 14

I woke up on February 15, which happened to fall on a Saturday, to the strains of the Beatles singing, “Today Is Your Birthday.” I groaned and tried to burrow forgetfully under the down comforter, but it was not to be. There stood Bob, proudly holding out a teakwood tray covered with a linen napkin. When I hauled myself into a sitting position, he removed the napkin with a flourish, to reveal a breakfast of fresh-squeezed orange juice, pancakes, and bacon, along with a steaming cup of coffee. Once the tray was stably perched on my lap, he produced a little crystal bud vase with a red rosebud and some baby’s breath and placed it ceremoniously on a corner of the tray.

I looked up at my husband, still an attractive man at age fifty-one, standing there waiting for me to eat and promptly burst into tears. He carefully removed the tray from my lap, sat on the bed beside me, and took me into his arms.

“Hey, come on now. It’s really not all that bad. I turned fifty about fifteen months ago, and nothing has fallen off, nothing has rotted away, and the girls still give me the eye in the elevator.”

I just wailed; I couldn’t help it. What had Bob ever done to deserve a perfidious trollop like me? I almost confessed right then, but I couldn’t bear to hurt him. Besides, I was seeing Fred later, and I couldn’t just not show up, could I? And it would seem a little tacky to make a tearful confession to my husband and then run off into the arms of my lover. Even I knew that.

So I let myself be comforted; blew my nose a little loudly, I’m afraid; and dug into my (delicious) breakfast. Bob sat there beaming, watching me eat. My capacity for deceit seemed to know no bounds.
