Chapter 41

It was Friday morning. Sid stopped in the office briefly before he took off to Atlanta for the weekend. Larry warned him a second time to be wary of Marn, but Sid brushed him off, as usual.

Well, Larry thought, he’d learn soon enough. Jeffery Marn hadn’t built one of the largest firms in the South by being a nice guy. He was one of the most ruthless lawyers Larry had ever met, and he regularly instilled fear in the associates who worked for him.

Larry hadn’t cut it, but he hadn’t left Phillips Marn with anything but respect for the man. Marn’s legal acumen was phenomenal, but his social theories and hardline Southern politics were another story completely. It was these which ultimately helped Larry realize that he didn’t belong at Phillips Marn. A queer lawyer with a black husband would never be accepted in that firm’s culture.

“Did he overhear us last time?” Keith Summers asked from the opposite side of his desk.

His question brought Larry back to the conversation at hand. “Sid?”

Keith nodded, his hands knotting around each other.

“He didn’t hear a thing,” Larry replied. “And by the time we’re done, he won’t be able to touch you anyway.”

“But if he finds out…”

“He won’t.”

“He already threatened to fire me. If Marn tells him…”

Larry eyed him with a growing disdain. Unfortunately, it seemed as if Sid might be correct, Summers wasn’t right for Rivers and Dunn. “Marn isn’t going to tell Sid anything. I worked for Jeffery Marn. He would never divulge an advantage like that, not when he thinks he already has you in his pocket as a potential spy.”

“I never said I would do that!” Summer blurted.

“No, but when he calls, you’re going to let him assume he can use you, even if it’s unwillingly. Then you come straight to me.”

“But if Sid finds out…”

Jesus Christ, this kid. Larry leaned forward in his chair, his eyes flaring with intensity. “Do you know why Marn wanted to meet Sid face to face? He’s waiting to see what Sid is willing to lose. Marn has the potential to lose everything; he needs to know if Sid is prepared to do the same. That’s how he operates.”

“But Sid’s not willing to lose anything,” Summers mumbled, confused by Larry’s anger.

Larry sat back, the corners of his mouth slightly upturned. “Exactly, and that’s his weakness. How’s your research coming?” he asked as a distraction. Now that he had all the information from the zip drive, he could help Summers and keep Sid off his back.

“My informant has clammed up,” Summers answered.

Larry expected as much. Marn would’ve circled the wagons and warned of talking to anyone outside of other Marn associates. And since Marn now had their name as the firm coming after him, he’d be sure to spread the information to his underlings and start his counter-offensive. That was precisely the reason Larry had sent Summers to him with the draft brief.

Things were about to get bloody, much more vicious than Sid ever considered, and Larry planned to be ready to benefit from the carnage.
