Candidates’ health and wealth are the two subjects about which journalists have a special obligation to be nosy. Both subjects could yield information that might be disqualifying. Still, we must keep in mind that of the ten elected presidents whose administrations have touched most Americans today—Hoover through Clinton—only Franklin Roosevelt died in office of a disease that could have been made known to voters.

America, moreover, has inadvertently created the most arduous leadership selection system in the world. Our obstacle course of primaries and caucuses is roundly faulted for many reasons. It is certainly obscenely expensive. It rarely promotes reasoned debate. It obviously turns off many eligible voters. It does not test for many of the qualities necessary for a candidate to be an effective president. But as a stress test, it is hard to imagine a better gauge of a future president’s physical stamina.
