I’m already at the bar when Carter comes in. He comes to the secluded table I chose and sits down across from me with a quizzical look on his face.

“What’s going on?” he asks.

“You still haven’t heard from Carl?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “No. I tried to call him a couple of times, but he didn’t answer. What’s going on? What happened to your hands?”

It was like it had taken him those few seconds to notice the bandages wrapped around my hands and arms.

“Did you hear about the car bomb yesterday?” I ask.

“I did. It was on the news… was that your car?”

His eyes are wide like he can’t fathom that he’s sitting across the table from me after I was in a bombing. I understand the reaction. After seeing the condition the victim was in yesterday, I wouldn’t believe it myself.

“No. It was the car parked in front of mine. I was sitting inside my car when it exploded, which is probably the only reason why I’m not more seriously injured. I ran up and helped the guy out of the car, so I got some scratches and minor burns, but I’m okay. He was alive when the ambulance came and was transferred to the trauma unit. I haven’t heard any updates.”

Carter shakes his head again, like it’s the only reaction he can come up with. “No, I haven’t, either. Like I said, it was on the news, but they didn’t mention any victims. They just said that there was an explosion involving a vehicle. I hope that doesn’t mean the other driver died and they’re just trying to find next of kin for notification.”

“So do I,” I say. “But this whole situation is just getting more complicated and more suspicious.”

“What whole situation?” Carter asks.

“Yesterday morning, Carl called me and said he really needed to talk to me about something important. But he had things he had to do and wasn’t going to be able to meet with me until the evening. I agreed and went about my day. That’s when the explosion happened. I ended up in the hospital, so I texted him to let him know that I wouldn’t be able to meet him on time but could meet him when I was discharged. Unfortunately, they decided to keep me overnight for observation, so I wasn’t able to meet him that night. I messaged him again to let him know that, but he didn’t respond to either text.”

“Hm.”

I nod. “I called him again this morning, and still didn’t hear from him. Total radio silence. I don’t know what happened to him. So, I’m in town for a memorial service for someone who died in a bombing, then I’m a few yards away from someone else who is attacked by a bomb. He tells me he really needs to talk to me about something important, then disappears. Then when I get back to the hotel, I find this.”

I take the papers off the chair beside me where I had placed them and slide them facedown across the table toward Carter.
