Resilience

Research during the past 15 years has focused on students who have all of the characteristics of being at high risk of school failure but nonetheless perform academically at high levels of proficiency. Identified by researchers as “resilient” children and youth, these students seem to thrive in spite of personal challenges. Over time, research from Johns Hopkins University and the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (among others) has helped to identify these characteristics of resilient children and youth (Benard, 1991; Krovetz, 1999).

Social competence. Resilient students tend to have the qualities of responsiveness, flexibility, empathy, and caring, communication skills, a sense of humor, and other pro-social behavioral attitudes.

Problem-solving skills. Resilient students tend to have the ability to think abstractly, to be reflective, and to attempt creative, alternative solutions to both cognitive and life problems.

Autonomy. Resilient students tend to have a strong self-esteem and a sense of personal power and independence.

Sense of purpose and future.Resilient students tend to be optimistic about their future and to have healthy, realistic goals. (Barr & Parrett, 2003, p. 52)
