River Phoenix

(August 23, 1970-October 31, 1993)

Over the years, numerous Hollywood notables (including Wallace Reid, Barbara LaMarr, Jeanne Eagels, Montgomery Clift, John Belushi, and Chris Farley) died from drug overdoses. After a time, such untimely exits were no longer considered so shocking by much of the public. However, in the instance of talented actor River Phoenix, that was not the case.

Several individuals close to the young celebrity in his final years knew of the dramatic transformation that pessimism and substance abuse had made in the once gentle, insightful Phoenix. Yet, his tragic finale—played out so publicly—was difficult for the public at large to comprehend. Before his life spiraled out of control, the blond, blue-eyed River was a sensitive actor who had the potential to be one of the Hollywood greats. Even now, years after his death, his absence is keenly felt. Many of his fans regard him as an iconic cult figure—a martyr to the crass commercialism of Hollywood.
