Chapter Seven

Ryan gasped at the sight of Bishop Adler’s car in the driveway. “Oh no.”

Jason pulled his car alongside the kerb and put it in park. “Do you want me to come in with you?”

“No!” Ryan shouted before he could stop himself. “Sorry.” He reached out and squeezed Jason’s hand. “I didn’t mean to yell at you. It’s just something I’m going to have to face on my own.”

“Whose car is it?” Jason asked.

“Bishop Adler’s.” Ryan shook his head and looked at the house. “Of all the people to catch me staying out all night…”

“You could tell him you were giving comfort to someone in need,” Jason suggested.

“I can’t lie to him.”

“You wouldn’t be.”

Ryan’s breath caught. Did Jason really need him or did he simply need someone? What would it be like to have someone feel such a base emotion for him? “I should go.”

Jason rubbed Ryan’s knuckles. “Call or come by as soon as you can. Until I hear from you, I’ll worry.”

“I will.” Ryan pulled his hand away and opened the car door. “Who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and Bishop Adler will give me some answers about St. Xavier before he tosses me out of the church on my ass.”

“If he does, and you need a place to stay, you know where to find me.”

Ryan shook his head. Although the idea of taking refuge with Jason was appealing, Ryan knew it wouldn’t be right. One night of unforgettable passion didn’t equate to shacking up. “I’ll figure something out,” he mumbled before getting out of the car.

He smiled once more at Jason before shutting the door and making his way towards the rectory. Ryan had known he’d have to talk to his spiritual mentor, but he’d hoped he’d have more time to figure out what to say. Well, time’s up, he said to himself as he walked into the house.

“Where have you been?” Bishop Adler asked from his position on the sofa.

“St. Xavier,” Ryan replied. He stood just inside the door with his hands clasped behind his back.

“I told you to forget about the monastery.”

“Yes, you did, but the owner came to me for help, and I couldn’t turn him away.” Ryan crossed to one of the wingback chairs and sat uneasily. “There are spirits trapped there.”

Bishop Adler’s facial expression didn’t change at the announcement. “You knew,” Ryan surmised.

“Leave it,” Joseph replied.

“I can’t do that.” Ryan leant forward in the chair. “How can you?”

“Because I was there that day, and I saw what she did to them. Believe me, son, no amount of prayer is going to rid that place of the tragedy that unfolded there.”

“How do you know? Have you tried?” Ryan asked.

“No, and I never will. Stirring them up will only make things worse for them and for the Church.”

“Why? Tell me what really happened that day.” Ryan held his breath. Maybe he’d finally get some answers to the whispered words that sang in his ears every time he stepped foot outside Jason’s cottage.
