While Nicky and Queenie rested on a rug in the corner, Lin and Viv sat at the dining room table with Leonard working on the seating arrangements for the wedding reception. Leonard had a program on his laptop that helped plan out where certain sized tables would go according to the number of people in attendance and how many people would sit at each table.

Leonard rolled his eyes. “Why are you changing it again? It’s like starting from scratch.”

“Because what we came up with isn’t the best.” Viv sorted through the list of attendees. “It doesn’t hurt to try another arrangement if it will make things nicer for the guests.”

“We’ve been doing this for three hours. I didn’t know I had to move in here,” Leonard fussed.

Lin brought over cups of coffee and some slices of cake. “No complaining,” she told Leonard. “We’re actually doing a really good job. Most things have been taken care of already. If we make a good seating plan people will have more fun and will be able to interact easier with their friends. And anyway,” she leveled her eyes at the man, “the person who is my escort down the aisle has responsibilities. You have to help us with some of the planning.”

“You didn’t tell me that before I accepted the job. I didn’t know I was going to be tortured.” Leonard kidded them, “Can I back out?”

“No,” the cousins replied in unison without even looking up.

Leonard said, “Then I’m taking a break to enjoy my cake, otherwise, I’m going on strike.”

“Did you get your tuxedo?” Viv asked the man as she made notes in the margin of the lists.

“Yes, I did. It’s not very comfortable, but I look quite handsome in it. At least, that’s what Heather told me.”

Lin and Viv chuckled.

“As soon as you walk me down the aisle, you can go change into jeans and a work shirt,” Lin told him.

“If only,” Leonard muttered.

Six months ago, Lin and Viv decided to ask Anton and Leonard if they would walk them down the aisle on their wedding day.

At first, Lin didn’t think Leonard wanted to do it since he was quiet for several minutes just staring at the cousins, but the reason for the silence was he’d teared up and was afraid he’d break down if he started to speak. A few tears did sneak out and ran down his cheeks until he’d batted them away with his hand. “It would be an honor,” he’d told Lin when he cleared his throat. “Are you sure you want me to do it?”

Lin wrapped him in her arms in a big hug and reassured him that she didn’t want anyone else.

Lin and Viv pushed the charts and lists to the side to enjoy the coffee and cake.

“What’s happening with the case?” Leonard asked. “Are you going to have this thing solved by the wedding?”

“Who knows.” Lin added milk to her coffee. “Maybe not.”

“But on the day of the wedding there will be no talk and no thoughts about this awful case.
