6 Wire-Material Transition

For instruments with mixed stringing—both iron and brass wire—there is a location in the compass where the transition from one material to the other occurs. A way to identify this location is by means of safety factors. Brass has a lower tensile strength than iron, and consequently lower fL-wire values (chapter 2). Since safety factors are based on the relationship of fL-scale to fL-wire (chapter 3), the lower fL-wire values of brass produce smaller safety factors and less slack strings in the bass compared to iron. Looking at stringing from bass to treble, brass strings are used until their safety factors are too small—that is, the strings are too close to breaking—and then iron strings are used. For instruments that include both yellow and red brass strings, there are two transition points: red brass to yellow brass, and yellow brass to iron.
