As soon as I land back in Chicago, I call Charlotte and let her know that want to surprise Summer. Charlotte, always the helpful one, informs me that Summer is in her office. I go home for a quick shower and immediately make my way to the hospital.

I need to see her as soon as possible.

It’s Friday afternoon, and the sun hangs low in the sky as I make my way to the hospital. It’s been days since I last saw Summer, and my eagerness to see her again is almost insane. The vibrant energy of the city buzzes around me as I step inside the familiar walls of the hospital.

I’ve missed her so damn much.

Before heading to her office, I make a quick stop at the vending machine. I know Summer’s fondness for KitKat bars, and I want to surprise her with a small treat. The machine obediently delivers the chocolatey delight, and I clutch it in my hand as I approach her office.

I knock lightly on the door, and she looks up from her paperwork with a surprised smile. The moment her eyes meet mine, a rush of emotions floods over me. I long to see her and hold her.

She doesn’t waste a second and springs up from her chair to rush into my arms. Her presence is like a balm to my soul, and I wrap my arms around her, holding her as if I never want to let go. The scent of her perfume envelopes me. I inhale deeply, savoring the moment.

“I missed you,” I whisper against her ear, my voice filled with genuine affection.

In response, she kisses my cheek, her lips warm and soft against my skin. My heart skips a beat.

I decide that this is the perfect moment to give her the pendant I’ve been carrying with me. I pull it from my pocket and present it to her, a small box that holds a world of unspoken emotions.

“I was always thinking of you,” I tell her, my voice soft and sincere.

Her eyes light up with delight as she opens the box to reveal the delicate sapphire pendant. I’m hoping that she sees it with as much importance as I mean for her to see it with, as a testament to the connection that we share despite the circumstances that are keeping us from being together. She takes it in her hand, her fingers tracing the contours of the pendant, and I admire the way it complements her beauty.

With a bright smile, she looks up at me and says, “It’s beautiful.”

Without hesitation, she places the pendant around her neck, the chain disappearing beneath her scrubs. It settles against her skin like it belongs there.

As much as I want to lose myself in the moment, I know that there are matters we need to address. I decide to be patient, to give her the space she needs to open up.

“How are your patients?” I ask.

She tells me about her day and her patients. We talk about the hospital, and she mentions the upcoming trip.
