I suppose in hindsight it’s not surprising that Camilla and I ended up with a dysfunctional mating ceremony.

Don’t get me wrong, there was the slightest veneer of normalcy.

It was short and sparsely attended—they all are—and it took place in the Sage House ballroom, which is also a normal occurrence as they tend to be held in the alpha’s “territory.”

Under the flickering light of the candle-lit ballroom, we were each anointed with the earth of Goldenrod by the Administrator, and we both clearly pronounced our vows, promising to live our lives within the Order and maintain the expectations set forth by the Golden Alpha in order to procreate and free our people.

All of that was normal, but it wasn’t enough to cover up an absolute disaster of a situation.

One of the strangest parts included the overwhelming number of attendees who seemed to have some sort of open vendetta against the union: my father, Orion, Elizabeth, Jason, and, of course, the Administrator himself.

And other than my father, who sat through the ceremony hunched next to my beaming mother in the same silence he’d adopted through this entire process, the others had no qualms about hiding their condemnation.

I’m not sure why Orion and Elizabeth are even here. Elizabeth spent the entire ceremony sniffling into a handkerchief—at one point releasing an echoing, wretched sob. Orion switched between consoling her and glaring daggers at me.

My siblings’ attitudes varied the full spectrum. Noah seemed uncomfortable and distracted—probably wishing he was anywhere else—and Stella was obviously worried, watching the ceremony and the attendees with growing concern.

Jason was just strung out, a mood he always seemed to inhabit these days. Throughout the ceremony, he wrenched in his seat fretfully as if he was battling with himself about whether or not he should put a stop to this.

The most bizarre part, but perhaps the most unsurprising, was the Administrator's emphasis on specific ominous words in the vows.

Never have the words “alpha’s choice to honor this omega’s call” sounded so sinister and disappointment ridden. That was also when Elizabeth’s sob rang out through the otherwise quiet room, which only added to the drama.

So, in the end, it was not as happy of a ceremony as those I’ve attended in the past.

There also was Camilla’s dress—or really her entire costume—which was not the usual modest white gown I’d come to expect. Instead, my mother seemed to have dipped her in gold paint, leaving her unable to stand without wobbling precariously under the weight of a giant spiked headband.

And now, as the Administrator pronounces the ceremony complete, there’s a smattering of half-hearted applause as I lean down to press a chaste kiss to my mate’s golden forehead.

Her eyes flick up to mine as her call starts softly singing. The bands of control holding in my patience and respect for the Order start to slip at the sound. My hands come up to touch her delicate features as a dark heat swirls through my body.

We can finally put this all behind us.
