1 In fact the total number of members of the new Bundestag was 603, owing to five extra seats (Überhangmandate). Nevertheless, this was a significant reduction compared with the numbers who entered the German parliament after the federal elections of 1990, 1994 and 1998: 662, 672 and 669 respectively.
