Alcea rosea

Plant type: Biennial or perennial

Bloom time: Midsummer to fall

Best location: Full sun; deep, rich soil

Diseases: Crown rot, leaf spot, mildew, rust, wilt

Garden pests: Aphids, borers, Japanese beetles, nematodes, slugs

Good garden companions: White border phlox (Phlox paniculata), baby’s breath (Gypsophila paniculata)

Propagation: Seed (often self-sows, assuring a continuous supply of plants)

Zones: 3–8

These tall-growing flowers are prized because they are so stately and bloom over a long period in a wide range of colors. They are biennial in warm climates and short-lived perennials in Zones 3 and 4. They are ideal against a building, fence, or hedge, since they need protection from wind; otherwise, they require staking. They have been favorites in cottage gardens for generations and were one of the few flowers grown around American farmhouses a century ago.

GROWER’S CHOICE

The old-fashioned, single-flowered holly-hocks are slightly hardier and often taller than the double hybrids, but the latter are showier, and their ruffled, roselike blooms come in many shades. ‘Chater’s Double’ is one of the most popular cultivars and comes in a range of colors. All types are 4–8 feet or more tall.
