Chapter Eight

Kaz

I know fuck all about women. I know even less about Victoria, it seems.

She’s always finding some new way to surprise me. I mean, I knew she could hold her own from our first confrontation when some of that fire finally erupted from her, in the rare moments her bravado falls and the woman underneath comes to light, I find myself wanting to see more of it, more of her.

She doesn’t hide her surprise and amazement. The jet put a sparkle in her eyes, and the hotel room only added to her childlike wonder. I watch her inspect her room, taking in the view of the most picturesque ocean with pods of dolphins coming to splash above the surface. Finally, she makes an adorable little squealing noise and throws herself on top of the bed, spreading her arms as if to make a snow angel.

Despite myself, I smile.

Christ, this girl is getting to me. Then again, maybe it’s for the best. We’re supposed to be some kind of couple, supposed to be madly in love to get my horrendous ex-wife to leave me alone. She was a cunt in the lobby, and something tells me it won’t be the last time she makes everyone uncomfortable. I’m not sure what made Gen think it was a good idea to invite her in the first place.

The rehearsal dinner is tonight, and we’ll be expected to make our first appearance for everyone to see. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Vic because I’m sure she’s already making herself nervous as all hell, but it’s important that we seem put together. Eyes have been on me since my parents bit it, and even if Genevieve is leaving behind the Kazimir name, there will undoubtedly still be talk to contend with.

Vic and I will be matching for every event. My cufflinks will accentuate all of her jewelry pieces. The color scheme of her dress will compliment my ties. There won’t be a single detail unaccounted for, and I paid good money to ensure it.

All of her garment bags are labeled by the event and waiting for her in the spacious closets. There were also a few swimsuits for her, which admittedly, weren’t easy to find. I don’t know anything about her personal style, so I went for variety and swiped my card when prompted.

Maybe I should’ve paid a personal stylist to come on the trip for hair and makeup. I didn’t even think about that. I don’t know that Victoria would even want help, but it’s rude to assume, and even if we’re only pretending to be dating, I assume it would be my job to bend to every possible whim.

It doesn’t take me long to get ready. I’m wearing exactly what Gen instructed down to the flecks of crimson in the tie she selected well before the date of the wedding was even confirmed. Our father, damn him, isn’t here to give her away, so that responsibility falls on me.

I don’t hear anything from Victoria for a few hours.
