Weynild felt Raine tense. She could read her lover so well.

“Of course not,” Raine said, knowing exactly what Weynild was talking about, “I am not ashamed of my mother’s people.”

Weynild took Raine’s chin in her hand and gently guided her gaze upward, staring into the violet eyes. “I meant, was it hard to reveal yourself so soon after Hel’s touch?”

A muscle in Raine’s cheek was prominent as she clenched her jaw. Hel had kissed her and Raine had unwillingly responded, unable to resist the goddess. Hel brought out the violet in her eyes almost as effortlessly as her love did, and it was a terrible thing for Raine. “Yes,” she admitted, “it was hard. It makes me feel vulnerable to do so around anyone but you.”

“Well, I for one don’t think you should do it around anyone but me.” Weynild’s voice had the low, throaty, playful tone reserved solely for her, and as always it filled Raine with warmth. Weynild took her hand. “Come,” she commanded.

Raine followed her, assuming they were going to bed, but instead Weynild led her to the stained glass doors.

“And what is this?” Raine asked. “In the mood for a little exhibitionism?”

“You think of only one thing around me,” Weynild said.

“That’s not true,” Raine began, “okay, that is true. But tell me your mind is not always occupied by the same thing.”

“Of course it is,” Weynild said, “but come along now.”

It had been a wonderful and productive evening, but Maeva was grateful to retire to the guest wing. She looked forward to seeing her young companion, and although she might make excuses to Raine, she made none to herself. She had kept Kiren from the gathering out of jealousy. The young woman had been so sheltered growing up, she did not want to suddenly expose her to a foreign culture, especially when that culture consisted entirely of gorgeous, highly sexual, non-monogamous women.

But she did not see the little beauty in her suite.

“Where is Kiren?” she asked the chief escort of her guards.

“She is out on the terrace star-gazing.”

“By herself?”

“Of course not,” the guard replied, “she is with a full complement of guards.”

Maeva pushed through the stained glass doors, admiring the scene depicted on the glass and the artistry with which it was rendered. It was dark on the terrace, and Maeva assumed Kiren had requested the torches extinguished so she could better see the stars. She saw the slender figure, flanked by four elven soldiers, and all five seemed frozen in place, their backs to her. She approached quietly as not to disturb them, and joined Kiren’s side. When Kiren did not acknowledge her presence, she looked down at the little beauty, who gazed forward into the darkness a look of wonder on her face. Maeva glanced to the guards, who also stared into the blackness in front of them, pure astonishment on their elven features. Maeva looked into the darkness, unable to see what held them all enraptured, when the darkness very subtly shifted in front of them.
