Chapter 4

Karen had never been more grateful for so many patients her entire career. One patient after the other, she ended up seeing just short of twenty. Most were local diabetics who needed their prescriptions updated, or their insulin dosages adjusted. A few were internal medicine patients, a couple of ear infections, and one case of food poisoning.

A productive day.

At least it kept her from dwelling on the sense of betrayal she couldn’t quite shake. Sort of.

She kept running it over in her head, the moment she had assumed he was Whitley Green. Why hadn’t he corrected her? Why would he let her believe something that wasn’t true? How silly he must have thought she was, making assumptions and never waiting to learn the truth. And the way she had agreed so quickly to help him? He must have thought he had found a real dupe.

She should have known. He was a public figure. Elusive, yes, but not a recluse. Why hadn’t she recognized him for who he really was?

After seeing her final patient, she ducked out of the clinic through a back door, promising May she would finish up her charts on Thursday. She didn’t want to run into Dee, didn’t want to face a bunch of uncomfortable questions she knew the clinic administrator would have.

But when she walked out into the tiny, three-slot parking lot, she found Benton leaning against the passenger side of a black Mercedes-Benz E-250. She pretended she didn’t see him even though the sight of his long legs stretched out in front of him caused her to miss a step and nearly fall flat on her face. Again.

“I’m sorry,” he said as she walked passed. “It wasn’t my intention to mislead you.”

She didn’t respond. Instead, she paused at the front fender of her own car, a less extravagant Ford Focus, and began digging through her bag for her keys. Why did she never think to dig them out before she left the building? And why were they always at the very bottom of the bag?

“Karen,” he said, moving up behind her. “I needed you to trust me. And, for some reason, people rarely trust the boss.”

“It’s not because you’re the boss,” she said, unable to control her tongue. “It’s because you’re this wealthy jerk who intimidates everyone.”

“Do I intimidate you?”

There was amusement in his voice that made her look sharply at him.

“No. You annoy me.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t like liars.”

He touched her arm, and she immediately stepped back.

“I didn’t lie to you.” His voice had fallen an octave, so deep that it seemed to be coming straight from his chest.

“But you let me believe a lie.”

“I needed your help. If they saw me going through the narcotics cabinet, the guilty person would know we’re on to them.” He stepped closer to her. “Let me make it up to you. We could go to dinner.”

“And then what? You ask me to spy on Dee and the rest of the staff?” she asked, gesturing toward the building.

“This would be separate from that.
