MAKING IT FUN

I’ve noticed that when an assessment process seems like a lot of work, it tends to be on the wrong track. The question “How are we doing?” is nearly always interesting. The question, “How can we present our progress to the boss?” is nearly always deadening.

To be sure, most teams want to win. A good assessment process lets them see the scoreboard while they’re playing—to develop their own standards, and to recognize the standards of the overall organization. Once those standards are visible, then the pilot group members can direct their energies and efforts appropriately. If people feel safe, they can initiate and use assessment processes to raise questions not just about results, but about the worth and value of their efforts. That leads, quite naturally, to the kind of eye-opening storytelling and conversation that helps people make sense of their lives. In the end, that’s how you build capabilities that could lead to a better “score” next time—or, if not a better score, a better understanding of the score’s meaning.
