Choosing a table by the entrance of the overly lit bar that consisted of six Formica-covered tables and a three-stool bar, Adam sat and slugged down his beer simultaneously before his legs gave out.

It had been a while since he’d been on a date, but this was no normal kind of date, this was a date with a centuries-old creature of the night…and a very attractive one at that. Plus he had a whole list of questions he’d been going over in his head all day and was dying to ask him. He waited for Emerico to slide in the seat opposite him and take a pull from his beer before asking the number one question on his list. Seeing his chance, he went for it, the words rushing from his mouth.

“Did you kill my father? To bring me here so I can fight for your cause?”

Emerico’s left eyebrow shot up like a question mark, and his mouth fell open. “I did not kill your father. How could you even ask me that question? And it is our cause,” he reminded.

“Wait. Aren’t you the Prince of Darkness after all? The heartless bloodsucker that leaves his victims drained or else turns them into half-vampire zombie creatures that only exist so you could feed from them like a twenty-four-hour buffet? Call me crazy, but I believe what I’m asking is a legitimate question, don’t you?”

Emerico pursed his blue-tinged lips unfavorably.

“I guess not,” Adam responded before chugging most of the contents of his bottle. He let out an involuntary burp, readying himself for his next question. “Did that creep, Constantin, and his amigos kill my dad?”

Adam braced himself for the answer, expecting the worst.

“I can honestly tell you that I don’t know. They are an old clan that has many powers, mostly devious and dark ones. My clan is not like them. We are simple vampires—”

“Whatever that means,” Adam interrupted.

“It means we coexist with humans, and they us. It has been that way for centuries. Aznar knew that and trusted us, becoming allies. He knew that we needed each other if we wanted to exist, to be able to survive. If not, the Romanians would’ve wiped us both out a long time ago, and that includes your family, so don’t judge us too harshly.”

Adam slumped in his chair and crossed his arms across his chest, the effects of the beer on an empty stomach already lubricating his brain. He gazed across the table. He didn’t need beer goggles to realize that he was crushing hard on Emerico. Those dark chocolate eyes that danced with flecks of amber and yellow, his aquiline nose leading to the most perfect lips and cleft chin he’d ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on made his stomach flip and his underwear tight.

No, Adam thought. He couldn’t fall for a vampire. What kind of future would they have together? Not to mention, Emerico lived far away from his hometown. Didn’t people always say that long
