Culture Clash!
To help an evangelical have a substantive discussion about gay and lesbian issues, remind them that (1) Jesus was a friend of the outcast, and that (2) he commanded that his followers look at their own sin before looking to the problems of others (Matthew 7:3).
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Regardless of their point of view with regard to the causes of homosexuality, evangelicals are in clear agreement about this concept: At the level of action, everyone is responsible for his or her own choices.
Thus, regardless of any sort of genetic disposition or nurtured tendency, people are responsible for choosing how they live out their sexuality. In view of the clear record of scripture, evangelicals believe that the only God-honoring (and thus ultimately fulfilling) sexual union is to take place between a man and a woman within the bonds of marriage. Clearly then, engaging in homosexual activity is prohibited, as are many of the other sexual practices that have become the norm in a culture that erroneously equates sexual gratification with essential personhood.
For evangelicals, healthy sexual behavior is a choice, just as is healthy behavior toward food or exercise, or even the development of healthy attitudes and behavior toward other potentially addictive substances such as alcohol. Each of us have predispositions toward certain kinds of sin, and each of us are responsible for our actions in regards to them. Certainly human sexuality is complex and multifaceted, and thus a simplistic approach is naïve. However, at the bottom line, evangelicals believe that regardless of our sexual tendencies, we are all responsible for how we act on them.
