ilbert was woken abruptly by somebody banging on the door. He nearly toppled off the bed, blinking like an owl in the bright light streaming through the windows. Where was he? What time was it? And what the ever-loving hell was going—

“Magician! Goddamn you, get your arse out of that bed, now!”

Barely awake enough to confirm that yes, he was indeed clothed and therefore yes, he could answer, Gilbert rolled out of bed, stumbled to the door, and yanked it open before the pounding made his head explode.

“What?” he mumbled. He was so not a morning person.

A very annoyed Hugo was on his doorstep, hands planted on his hips. “So, have you got it? I have to go to town right away if I want to find the good stuff at the scrap market, you know.”

Gilbert stared at him blankly. So many things he didn’t understand in that sentence.

“The money, magician. From last night,” Hugo explained, pinching his nose. “Good Lord, what have I done wrong in my life to deserve this? Hello? Are you awake?”

“Oh. Oh, yes, sure. Sorry.” Gilbert shook his head, trying to clear it, as he patted down his jacket. There, he could feel all the coins, weighing down the lining. He pressed his hand to his eyes and tried to focus. He was never any good at magic when he’d just woken up, though, and all he managed to do was make the lining split open, sending a cascade of coins and bills raining all around him, to the floor. “Oh, shit. Sorry. Here, let me—”

But Hugo shoved him out of the way, muttering, and gruffly collected it himself. When he stood up with a considerable mound of coins and notes in his arms, his frown actually turned into something like admiration. “Why, well done, you two.” He whistled, then patted Gilbert’s arm. “I’m off to the market. Try to be awake when I get back, I might need some help with Herbert.”

He shut the door in Gilbert’s face, leaving him blinking at the ruined wood, a little dazed.

He looked down at himself. He was still dressed, down to his boots, and he was starving, his rumbling stomach informed him. With a sigh, he decided he might as well go grab something to eat. There was no way he’d be able to get back to sleep, especially not as the memories from the night before flooded his brain, demanding his attention. He glanced around for Emilia and found her snuggled on a quilted pillow. He poked her gently, but all she did was turn over and go back to sleep, resolutely ignoring him.

He stepped out in the gray, early-morning light, huddling in his jacket against the biting cold, and headed to the canteen. It was locked up, and the camp was deserted. He poked around until he found a few crackers and a piece of cheese, and he sat somewhat dejectedly at the large, empty table, munching slowly.

He couldn’t stop replaying what had happened in that alley the night before.
