In the South China Sea and maritime Southeast Asia writ large, two CCP ambitions intersect (Figure 7). The first is to become the world’s prime geopolitical player. The second is to have a world-class military that can push hostile powers far away from China’s coastal economic centers, pose threats to the US and its allies in the Western Pacific, and influence events and protect supply lines in the Indian Ocean.

China’s focused and determined strategy in these areas is a result of their perceived importance. China is trying to create a Chinese lake in the South China Sea and has militarized the waters to challenge US and allied maritime interests. In so doing, it has undermined confidence in American primacy and positioned China to make moves toward becoming the Asian hegemon.
