Chapter 16
Around 5 AM, I was taking my turn on guard duty and doing my best to stay awake when I heard the throaty roar of an engine off in the distance. I got up from my chair and limped to the kitchen to look out the window at the lit front porch. I decided that between the darkness and the five-foot blanket of snow that had fallen, I was wasting my time. I refilled Dapper’s water bowl, started the coffee maker, then sat back down. Dapper, who hadn’t moved from the chair since he’d laid down hours earlier, glanced over at me, then refocused on Jerry the Dognapper and Coke Bottle who were still secured to the pipe and softly snoring.
The roar of the engine continued to get louder, and I debated about waking Josie and Chef Claire who were sound asleep on couches on either side of me. Before I could make my decision, Josie stirred then sat up and rubbed her eyes. She looked around the room and caught my eye.
“Morning,” she said. “I thought I heard something.”
“You did,” I said, getting my first whiff of the coffee. “It sounds like a snowmobile.”
“The rescue team is here early.”
“Yes,” I said, rubbing my thighs. “Let’s just hope they’re coming to rescue us.”
“Now there’s a cheery thought to get the day started,” she said as she climbed to her feet. Then she winced. “Oh, I hurt everywhere.”
Chef Claire rolled over and opened her eyes.
“I smell coffee,” she said.
“Good morning,” I said. “It’ll be ready soon. Did you get some sleep?”
“Yeah, I was out,” Chef Claire said, sitting up and grimacing. “Man, that was a workout yesterday.”
“Do all of us a favor and remember this moment the next time you start thinking about asking us to go cross-country skiing,” Josie said to Chef Claire.
“Geez, Josie,” I said, shaking my head. “It’s five in the morning, don’t start.”
“Thank you,” Chef Claire said, heading for the kitchen. “Maybe you’ll feel better after coffee.”
“Well, I certainly couldn’t feel any worse,” Josie said.
I glared at Josie, and she shrugged then stretched back out on the couch, moaning all the way down.
“What a baby,” I said.
The roar of the engine got close, then it stopped. Chef Claire glanced out the window, then tapped on it and waved.
“It’s Rooster,” Chef Claire said. “It must be nasty out there, he’s wearing snow boots.
“Is anybody else with him?” I said, hobbling toward the door.
“It doesn’t look like it,” Chef Claire said, turning back to the coffeemaker.
I waited for the knock and then opened the door. A snow-covered Rooster was standing under the porch light brushing the snow off and stamping his feet. He stepped inside, and I quickly closed the door to keep the cold air out then gave him a hug.
“Thanks for coming, Rooster,” I said. “Is anybody with you?”
“No, but they’re on their way,” he said, glancing around the camp. “Sorry, it took me awhile to get out here. I had to get organized and then wait a couple of hours for the snow to let up.
