It was just what she had needed after a tiring week or so of painting, sanding and lugging heavy beds and sofas up and down stairs. It was a clear and crisp morning. A light dusting of snow the night before had softened up the runs and the skiing was phenomenal. After completing a couple of circuits down the mountain Jem had decided that one final run would clear out the last of the cobwebs, before getting back to reality.

The seat bobbled and swayed gently as the lift hauled the line of eager skiers up the side of the steep hill. Jem smiled sadly as the couple in front of her snapped selfies before kissing, clearly forgetting that everyone behind them could see. ‘Ah, to be in love’ she mused, considering her singleton status and the impossible subject of her desires.

As she neared the crest of the hill her phone beeped and she quickly pulled her right hand free from its fleece lined glove. A message from Rachel. Jem quickly typed out a response before smoothly dismounting the ski lift and gliding to a stop out of the way of the other skiers.

Jem zipped the phone back into her pocket, adjusted her goggles and pulled the mitt back on before pushing off down the slope, taking a route that veered away to the right. The snow was powdery soft and Jem gracefully curved down the narrow opening into the woods, knocking branches and making little jumps over the uneven ground as the clearing narrowed further. At the bottom of the hill she could make out the dark tan wood of Rachel’s cabin, the black pick-up signalling that she was home.

Jem knocked on the door and after a few moments heard the clunk of the deadbolt being released before the door was flung open.

“Hey stranger, what have you been doing? You look like you’ve been through a snowdrift!”

‘Holy fuck, I’ve missed you’ was the only thought that crossed Jem’s mind as Rachel stood in the open door. “Hey!” The quiet resolution she had made to take an emotional step back from Rachel evaporated as she stepped into the cabin and threw her arms around the blond, skimming a kiss across her cheek as she pulled her into a close embrace. Jem felt Rachel shudder and saw goose bumps rise over her exposed skin.

“Oooh, you’re cold. Come in.” Rachel said after a few moments in Jem’s embrace.

As Jem took in Rachel’s appearance she finally realised that she might only be wearing a thin dressing gown and was suddenly frustrated at the mass of material that had distanced her from the gentle curves she had just being clinging to.

Her frustration only deepened when she spied the obvious reaction to the cold that had Rachel covering her chest with her arms. ‘Friends, friends, friends’ Jem reminded herself as Rachel turned and led her into the kitchen, busying herself with the coffee while Jem removed the heft of material that she currently despised. When she finally looked up Rachel was staring, her eyes roaming up and down her body.
