Chapter Twenty-Two

ESSY

“Essynda, how did you and Declyn meet?” Lillian casually asks with a smile.

I did not know to trust Lillian’s words. Is she legit, or is she up to something, especially when I notice the glint in her eyes?

The server removes my empty entrée dish. “Thank you,” I say with a smile to the server. He nods back to me in appreciation, then moves on to the next place setting.

Dekk leans towards me and kisses the corner of my mouth. I turn enough and return his gentle kiss to his lips. Dekk hugs me as encouragement.

I then smile at Lillian and reply, “Declyn and I met last year. He hired me as his bodyguard.”

Another server places my mains in front of me. The delicious aroma sets my belly rumbling and my mouth waters. Dekk leans toward my plate and slices my steak in bite sizes for me.

“His bodyguard? You. A woman.”

The attitude did not impress me. I smile and reply, “Yes. I’m fully qualified.” And place the fork containing a small bite-sized piece of steak with mushroom gravy in my mouth. The instant the meat touches my tongue, it melts, and the flavors explode in my mouth. If I could get away with it, I would moan in pleasure.

“What is there to be fully qualified?” Mr. Dumas sarcastically says.

I give him one of my looks, which my old FBI partner would say would scare him because he knew I had something in mind to hurt him.

I take another bite of my food. Place my fork down and sit a little straighter and swallow my mouthful. “Mr. Dumas, even though I might only have the use of one arm, I’d probably still out-shoot you and disable you. Never underestimate a woman,” I say with a smile. I pick my fork back up and take another mouthwatering bite of my meal, savoring the flavors.

The annoying man glances at Dekk. My husband smiles and nods. “You better believe it. My girl is one dangerous, kick-ass woman.”

I’m halfway eating the next delicious bite. When I feel I’m being stared at. I glance up to see the newcomers looking at me as if I were an alien.

“As soon as Essynda’s contract was completed, I offered her a new one for life,” Dekk says with a big smile. He picks up my hand and kisses the back of it. “I fell in love with her mind, body, and soul. She has taught me so much. Essynda remained professional throughout her bodyguard contract. She is one of the best in her industry.”

I lean over, kiss Dekk on his cheek, and whisper near his ear, “Thank you for saying that. I love you.”

Dekk releases my hand, so I place another fork full of food into my mouth. The hair at the back of my neck rose, and the warning tingles increased. Oh, crap. Something is about to happen.

The soft tones in my ear are the only sign my mother gives me before she starts her warning, “Essy, get up and go to the bathroom.
