CHAPTER ELEVEN - HALLUCINATION

Sean flicked on the turn signal of his car as he turned onto the street where his run-down apartment was. His place was located in a very different area of Winter Haven than Gareis Industries. He was on his way to pick up the things he would need to live with Dane for the foreseeable future.

As he drove down the familiar narrow streets, he felt slightly unreal. Not that he had any love for the hovel he was living in and now leaving, it was just a place to rest his head between searches for the scarred man. Partly, it was the shock over how his life had changed so drastically in less than twenty-four hours, but more importantly, it was the entry of Dane Gareis into it. He hadn’t allowed himself to feel anything for anyone in a long time. Yet in just a few short hours, Dane had slipped in underneath all his defenses and made him want again.

These last few years it’s as if I’ve been as dead as Carlos and the others. Dane is bringing me back to life. I thought that this was going to just be a job, a way to make the rent, not this. Never this. His palms were suddenly damp against the steering wheel. I have to keep him safe. I can’t fail in this.

That thought had him wanting to race back to Dane. He would just grab some clothes, his aging laptop, his toothbrush and his shaving kit from the cruddy apartment. All the rest could rot as far as he was concerned. He wouldn’t have bothered with any of it, but Dane had seemed to think that he should want some of his own things.

Sean felt a flush of shame at his behavior with Mr. Fioretti. He should have just allowed the tailor to get on with it and not involved Dane. He could still feel the brief touches of the young man’s hands against his inner thighs and ankles. Light touches. Gentle and tentative. But real. Ms. Darnley had looked ready to stroke out when Dane touched him.

If I had just kept it together and been professional, Dane wouldn’t have volunteered to measure me. He was shaking when he rushed out of the room.

Sean had run after him as fast as soon as he had stripped out of the basting pants. He had found Dane in the young man’s penthouse office. It was a twin to his corporate office just a few floors below, but the penthouse’s office, like the rest of Dane’s living space, was far more welcoming and warm than the corporate areas. Sean could feel Dane’s personality in the brightly woven rugs, the dark hardwood, and the piles of books with covers softened by multiple readings that were placed by every cozy chair and couch in the place. Dane was evidently a big reader.

Dane was seated behind a glass desk that matched the one downstairs. He had an affectionate, if slightly frustrated, expression on his face as he looked up at a dark-haired man dressed in a severe black suit.
