PRO SURFING
Competitive surfing can be credited with having grown the sport and enhanced its appeal. It has led to progress in riding techniques and board design, and has been largely responsible for popularising big-wave surfing in some of the world’s most exotic locations. Every bluffer needs to be able to claim that they’ve been there and done it (how they had a famous surfer on the ropes for an entire heat before losing at the last second, or how they were placed in the top 10 of a surfing tour at some stage in their lives). Serious surfers need to have a competition pedigree for credibility, and bluffers will know all about the importance of credibility.
It is essential, therefore, that you should have more than a passing knowledge of professional surfing and what makes up the tour. Anybody worth their bluffing salt should be able to show disdain for the judges, scoff at the system and hint at a deeper understanding of how the sport works. Even, and this is the important part, if it’s just so that you can say: ‘Of course, I never really believed in competition surfing. Free-surfing has always been my first love.’
THE ASP
Professional surfing – not just a bunch of guys and girls frolicking in the surf – actually has a governing body that enables surfers to enter competitions, then exacts entrance fees and prize taxes from them. It is known as the ASP, and is sometimes as venomous as its namesake. It stands for the Association of Surfing Professionals and steers the sport worldwide.
The professional surfing tour is divided into two tiers:
the WQS – World Qualifying Series
the WT – World Tour, formerly known as the WCT – World Championship Tour.
