Chapter Eight

An unknown man had recently been a visitor to the Red Rose message board on the Web site, Brady noted. Sure, the guy had used the screen name Justice, not Trent Wright, but he had asked questions about newcomers, women in particular, especially women with babies. He claimed that he wanted a ready-made family, and Lorelei Jasons, who ran the Web site, told him that if he was looking for a wife, he couldn’t do better than Red Rose.

Of course, Brady thought, drinking his third morning cup of coffee, there was no real proof that the message was from a man looking for his ex-wife, but he had a strong suspicion that it was.

Red Rose had been a town in need of men for a long time. The townspeople hadn’t made any secret of it. Any man seriously bent on finding a wife here would know that and simply come to see what he could see. Unless, of course, the man was looking for one particular woman and wasn’t quite sure where she was. Unless the man had read the News Notes section that the Web site had posted three days earlier, where Lorelei had mentioned that there were two new faces in town. She hadn’t named names. Lorelei was careful about such things, but even that much had been too much, and as soon as Brady had seen it, he had done what he had never done before. He had sent a message to Lorelei, explaining Susanna’s situation and asking her to be even more careful from here on out. Hence, Lorelei’s vague answer to the man’s question.

“I should have been on top of that Web site sooner,” Brady muttered, leaning back so that the front legs of his chair were off the ground. But he hadn’t been, and now who knew if Trent Wright was on Susanna’s trail or not?

“I have to go to town, Scrap,” Brady said, letting the chair down with a clatter of wood on wood. “Sorry you have to stay here, but they don’t allow dogs in the café.”

And they didn’t allow men to kiss the waitresses, either, Brady reminded himself, thinking of the way Susanna had fit against him last night. She had felt so right, even though touching her had been wrong.

She had planted flowers for him! This morning he’d awakened to look out and see their fragile and bruised but colorful petals waving at him in the breeze.

What kind of man would let a woman like that get away?

A man who didn’t deserve her, Brady thought. He didn’t deserve her. Neither did Trent Wright, but he was pretty sure the man would put two and two together and show up here sooner or later. It might take a while. Brady had added Susanna’s name to several other towns’ guestbooks in an attempt to lead the man astray. He hoped it worked.

But if it didn’t, well…

“I really need another cup of coffee,” he told his dog, and he knew right where to find the best cup and the prettiest, sweetest waitress a man could ever know.
