CHAPTER 14

THEO

“You can go home, sir.” My top software engineer, Quinn, turns in her chair and shoots me a worried glance. “Now that we’ve pinned down the issue, I can implement the fix myself.” She subtly emphasizes the word myself.

I don’t imagine anyone enjoys working with the CEO of their company breathing down their neck, but everyone in our tech department knows what they signed up for; I’m notorious for being hands-on with every detail of the company. If I could, I’d run the entire thing myself. The AI is my baby, built by my hands in a dusty garage, and I’ll never be able to fully pass it into other people’s control.

Baby. Shit.

My cell starts to ring at the same moment I remember that it’s two hours past the time I was supposed to meet Alice at the restaurant for our first parenting meeting. I tell myself that I was dealing with an essential emergency, but deep down I know that I could easily have passed the work off to my employees hours ago rather than fussing over their shoulders.

Sure enough, a check of my screen shows Alice’s name. “I’m very sorry,” I answer.

“Where are you?” She sounds more hurt than angry, and it stabs me in the chest as I hurry back to my office.

“I got caught up with an emergency at work.” Coward. “Can we reschedule?”

The usual sweetness in her tone is replaced with steel. “Are you going to reschedule the birth of your children, too? When the babies are screaming for their diapers to be changed, are you going to ask them to take a rain check? Sorry, little Timmy, Dad missed your big baseball game but he’ll try to cram you into his day planner next week. Because if that’s how this is going to go, I’m leaving right now and I’m doing this by myself.”

“That’s not fair, Alice.” I’ve never heard her this angry; I didn’t know she had this much fury it in her petite body. As I pass Leonie, she shoots me a quizzical look and gets up to bring me a cup of coffee. “I run a global tech company. Excuse me if I get caught up one time. That has nothing to do with my ability to be a good parent.”

You could never be a good parent, because you have no idea what that even means. Alice doesn’t say it, but she doesn’t need to. It’s painfully obvious to both of us.

“Why did you make me move into your building, away from my family, if you’re going to basically exile me and pretend I don’t exist?” I can hear a vulnerable break in her voice. My heart sinks, and defensive anger burns up in my chest.

“How is giving you a free high-end condo and every luxury you or the babies could want treating you like shit?” It sounds passive-aggressive, but it’s a genuine question. I don’t understand.

There’s a long silence. “If you have to ask questions like that, I don’t even want to talk to you right now.
